Learn more about machine vision! In our knowledge base we are explaining key technical terms about image processing. We give you an overview to topics like 3D machine vision or the established standards like CameraLink, GigE Vision or GenICam.
Sensors – also called sensing element – are technical components that detect
and measure specific physical or chemical properties and transform the
measured dimensions into signals that can be further processed.
Any image created using a lens and sensor arrangements will suffer from a non-
uniform distribution of intensity, because even if the entire field of view
has an even light distribution, the resulting image will suffer from uneven
overall intensity. This shading can be caused by the lens (vignetting) or, as
shown here, by the sensor.
Camera sensor sizes are quoted in imperial units, although this does
not directly give the physical dimensions of the sensor. They are strictly
a 'format size' which is a legacy from the pre-digital era, when many
cameras used vacuum tubes.
