What are the current main technological, economic or market-related trends in machine vision?
Michael Sehested Lund: We see a growing demand for small size industrial cameras offering a good relationship between a low price and good image quality combined with industrial robustness. Also we see a high demand for industrial cameras incorporating CMOS sensors, as CMOS sensors now provide high image quality and global shutter technology previously only available with CCD technology. This combined with high frame rates and blooming free technology, makes industrial cameras with CMOS sensors the preferred choice today for many applications in machine vision and traffic applications. And our new Spark series and Go series of area scan cameras have been designed to meet this market trend.
Another market trend, as we see it, is that the demand for the USB3 Vision interface is now increasing and also more and more customers are asking for cameras with a CoaXPress interface to run high speed inspection applications. Also we see an increased demand for vision systems using lower cost single board computers running Linux (embedded system).
Your product portfolio ranges from lower priced area scan cameras to high end multi-chip line scan and area scan cameras – what kind of applications do you serve with these different camera technologies?
Michael Sehested Lund: Yes, JAI offers cameras in both end of the price range. Our high-end multi-chip cameras are sold to applications with very demanding image quality. For example in food inspection many of our customers need very precise color imaging in fruit and vegetable sorting, and JAI multi-chip cameras deliver true colors as the camera detects the red, green and blue colors in 3 dedicated imaging channels. This provides very sharp and true color images. Our multi-chip cameras are also in high demand for print inspection, pharmaceutical and medical applications where color reproduction and image sharpness needs to be the very best.
But in many machine vision applications, single chip area scan cameras with Bayer color interpolation are good enough to do the inspection job. So to serve our customers we are also offering a wide selection of single-chip cameras - both color and monochrome - with different resolutions, frame rates and interface types.
For example, with the new Go series, JAI has established itself in the segment for lower priced and small size industrial area scan cameras, still maintaining good image quality and industrial robustness. The Go series is in high demand for machine vision applications in semiconductor, automotive, traffic and sports imaging and JAI has received very positive feedback from the market on the Go series. So the nearby JAI roadmap contains a range of new family members to the Go series incorporating some of the latest megapixel CMOS sensors from leading sensor vendors.
What other main developments is JAI currently working on?
Michael Sehested Lund: JAI will soon launch new cameras for Short Wave Infrared (SWIR) light (900 nm to 1700 nm) under a new family brand name. Our first new cameras in this family are based on JAI prism technology incorporating multiple InGaAs imaging sensors, which provides images with a range of new vision inspection information. This can prove very useful in industries such as food, recycling, wafer inspection and the pharmaceutical industry to further improve quality control through optical imaging.
What are the main strength of your company from your point of view.
Michael Sehested Lund: One of JAI´s strengths, in my opinion, is our very broad product program ranging from low priced area scan cameras to advanced multi-imager area and line scan cameras plus the fact that we can supply cameras for many light spectrums such as visible light, NIR light and SWIR light and also offer these combined in our multi-imager camera designs. Also our product quality is a major strength - we have customers running JAI cameras trouble free, year in and year out.
Looking back at the last 12 months, what have been the major highlights for JAI.
Michael Sehested Lund: I believe the launch of a range new area scan cameras in the Spark series and Go series is a major highlight for JAI. But also the implementation of a new global support system and improved support processes has to be on the list of major highlights.
