The lens‘s focusing uses a floating mechanism design which reduces aberrations from infinity to close working distances. This feature helps with intelligent traffic applications. The mechanism focuses whilst changing the spacing of some of its optical systems in order to minimise changes in aberrations due to the object's distance. The lens‘s construction is divided into a focus group that moves when focusing and a fixed group that remains stationary.

The FL-CC-5MX series from Ricoh offers high resolution (3,45 µm or 147 lp/mm from the centre to the edge) and a compact design (diameter 33 mm).
With a distortion of less than 0.1%, it is nearly negligible and the robust design guarantees an extended life, even in rough conditions.
