Reliable 100% inspection of challenging surfaces

Using structured illumination in combination with shape-from-shading technology, trevista is especially suited for the inspection of surfaces which are difficult to check, for example glossy metal surfaces.

The trevista is a complete vision system with dome-shaped illumination and industrial-grade PC for the inspection of challenging surfaces, both static and moving objects. It can carry out fast and fully automated inspection of components with a 100% coverage using shape-from-shading technology. The rugged design assists with reliable integration into the manufacturing process or into an automatic tester. The shape-from-shading technology can present defect characteristics with depths of only a few microns.

Inspect difficult surfaces fast and reliably with 100% coverage

Inspecting shiny and curved surfaces or materials with unsteady brightness are extremely challenging tasks for machine vision systems. The trevista method has been particularly developed to reliably detect even the smallest defects on difficult surfaces. The special technology offers fully automated, process-safe 100% inspection where the texture and the topography of the test specimen are inspected separately.

The optical 3D shape measurement detects even the smallest defects which significantly increases inspection accuracy. The separate inspection of texture and topography leads to a minimum of pseudo rejects which significantly reduces related costs since real defects such as scratches can be easily distinguished from supposed defects such as dirt on surfaces. The specially designed illumination unit reduces any interfering ambient light, hence allowing for reliable inspection without the need for additional components such as filters. With short cycle times (up to 200 parts per minute) you can reduce inspection time and enhance your productivity.

A future-proof solution

The trevista is a modular system consisting of various components giving you the flexibility of upgrading modules (for example the existing camera with a model that offers a higher resolution). This enables you to flexibly react to changing requirements.


Trevista process

Trevista is based on the patented shape-from-shading technology: diffuse structured lighting guarantees optimum illumination from different directions. Thus, even the most difficult shapes can be fully inspected. The trevista® process closes the gap between 2D image processing and optical 3D shape recognition. It combines the speed of 2D image processing and the precision of 3D recognition.

Topographic images are used for the three-dimensional presentation of surface shapes and the presentation of defect characteristics with depths of only a few microns. Generation of a textured image for detection of brightness differences on the inspected components. The trevista algorithm locates and classifies defects quickly, reliably and free of interference.

Algorithm and software

The calculation algorithm is computer-based and integrated into the software platforms Sherlock by Teledyne DALSA and Common Vision Blox (CVB) by STEMMER IMAGING. These software environments control the automatic evaluation of the topographic images.



trevista® variants

  • trevista Surface
    For the inspection of static parts with cycle times up to 200 parts per minute. The system operates with an area scan camera which can be selected according to your individual needs.

  • trevista Cylinder
    For the inspection of cylindrical components. Just like all trevista systems, trevista Cylinder is particularly suited for the inspection of glossy surfaces. Using a line scan camera trevista Cylinder delivers fast and reliable results even for the most challenging cylindrical components.

  • trevista Multiline
    For the inspection of moving components in rotary or translatory motion. trevista Multiline is perfectly suited for inspection tasks in running production processes. The system operates with a freely selectable area scan camera which reads out the individual sensor lines. Needless to say, trevista Multiline systems are already pre-configured by STEMMER IMAGING.
