trevista model for the inspection of cylindrical surfaces

The new version of vision system trevista Cylinder allows testing of cylindrical surfaces.

trevista is a patented machine vision tool for the automated inspection of technical and decorative surfaces. It has been developed for the reliable inspection of a range of surfaces from glossy components to diffusely scattering surfaces. trevista is available from STEMMER IMAGING as a complete system with lens, camera, software and PC.

Inspection of cylindrical surfaces

trevista Cylinder, developed for the inspection of cylindrical surfaces, is based on a patented "shape from shading" technology, just like trevista Surface, which has been developed for the inspection of flat and static surfaces. Information on the three-dimensional shape of an object can hereby be deduced from the shading of its surfaces.

Scanning speed up to 4x

The cylindrical objects inspected by trevista Cylinder are rotated along their longitudinal axis under the dome-shaped diffuser. During the rotation the line scan camera surveys the object with a scanning speed up to 4x. The profile data obtained are planar images of the uncoiled material surface. These synthetic images contain topographic information and allow inspection for characteristics such as scratches, dents, discoloration and stress marks according to their inclination, curvature and texture.

Integration of Teledyne DALSA’s Sherlock and Common Vision Blox

Topographical defects which are relevant for the function of a part can be distinguished from irrelevant stains caused by lubricants for example. A structured diffuse illumination of the part and a special calculation algorithm guarantee high-quality images for the subsequent automatic evaluation. The three-dimensional surface shape is displayed using topographic images which make defects of just a few micrometers depth visible. These defects can be located quickly, reliably and free of interference.
Thanks to the integration of software packages from Teledyne DALSA’s Sherlock and the in-house software library Common Vision Blox, STEMMER IMAGING offers trevista users a powerful and easy-to-handle complete solution.

High precision in production processes

The main benefits for trevista users lie in the early detection of manufacturing defects in the value chain and thus in the reduction of costs for quality assurance, as well as in the high precision and easy integration in production processes. The variety of surfaces and materials that can be tested with trevista is another great advantage of this vision system, which is also used for the inspection of rotated, milled, polished and galvanised components, even made from black plastic. trevista is ideally suited for glossy surfaces where conventional vision systems have reached their physical limits.
