Allied Vision Stingray

Modular concept FireWire cameras with extendable functionality

The Allied Vision Stingray is a mid range camera series that offers a unrivalled level of functionality in its class, as well as a highly attractive price/performance ratio on the IEEE 1394b interface. It includes image optimisation options, for example, shading correction and low-noise binning mode.

All models are equipped with CCD sensors with a wide choice in both monochrome and colour, offering resolutions from VGA up to 5 megapixels. To meet industrial requirements, the Stingray can be fitted with a x2 copper daisy chain connection.

Advantages of the Allied Vision Stingray

Look-up tables (LUTs)

LUTs allow for remapping pixel values, apply a function (such as gamma) to a particular pixel, or highlight a specific intensity value. As a preprocessing stage, a LUT can be used to minimize image data with binarization and thus transfer only the data required.

Built-in shading correction

Shading correction is used to compensate for non-homogeneities caused by lighting or optical characteristics within specified ranges. Thanks to this built-in functionality, industrial vision applications can still be designed with reasonably priced standard optics and illumination products, while the camera provides excellent uniform images. This relieves the host CPU, so more computing power is available to the actual image processing task.

Provision of a sequence mode

Sequence mode allows the usage of different user-controlled configurations for a single image trigger. In practice, this means that different light sources, lighting angles, exposure times or gain values can be used. This way, a single pass with a single camera delivers a high amount of information which is comparable to that of multiple cameras or combinations of camera and frame grabber. With this feature, costly and complex hardware solutions can be avoided, since e.g. multiple illuminations of the same object can improve failure detection and production security. It can also reduce inspection time in cases where various illumination set-ups are mandatory to inspect one object.

Allied Vision's modular concept

Based on Allied Vision's modular concept, it is possible to configure the Stingray with a choice of housings, sensors, filters and lens mounts to adapt it perfectly to individual requirements. All variants are also available as board-level versions. Development engineers have a large choice of adaptable cameras available to ease integration. This offers the possibility to select the perfect configuration even for a single instance application. Avoiding own customisation saves time during the development phase. From a purchasing point of view, the reduced lead time due to standard product models is attractive.

Smart features

The Stingray supports a wide range of features, such as gain (manual, auto), exposure (manual, auto), white balance (manual, one-push, auto), auto feature reference AOI, real-time shading correction, intelligent colour conversion and correction for extremely good and balanced colour representation. It also comes with a high SNR mode (16-bit), programmable look-up table (LUT), single-shot/multi-shot/free-run, deferred image transmission, programmable trigger delay, 2 programmable inputs, 4 programmable outputs, secure image signature (SIS) and a RS232 interface.
