GigE Vision - Device Discovery
As this is a network protocol, devices must first be found. For this, the GigE Vision standard allows users to search for cameras in a sub network. Cameras, in this case, play a passive part and respond to queries. The response to a query also contains information on the devices discovered, e.g., names and versions. Version 2.0 and higher versions of the standard optionally provide the additional functionality that cameras can make themselves known via DNS (Multicast Domain Name Service) and applications can discover these cameras via DNS-SD (DNS Service Discovery). The advantage of this approach is that packages do not need to be sent periodically through the network in order to find a new camera, but the cameras themselves log in and out.
