Morphological functions
In addition to basic morphological transformations, there are also geodesic transformations based on the concept of mathematical restoration.
In more sophisticated software packages it is possible to define mathematic filters that are able to adapt to image structures. For example, it is possible to eliminate all structures below a particular size. In addition there are methods available to separate objects from each other, as shown in this example with a group of coins touching each other.
In the left hand image, the blob tool has only found a single object because the items touch. In the second image, the coins have been separated using a morphological filter, and the blob tool is now able to locate six independent objects.
