Morphological functions

Mathematical morphology gets its name from the study of shape. Morphological imaging functions are ideal for highlighting structures within images.

In addition to basic morphological transformations, there are also geodesic transformations based on the concept of mathematical restoration.

In more sophisticated software packages it is possible to define mathematic filters that are able to adapt to image structures. For example, it is possible to eliminate all structures below a particular size. In addition there are methods available to separate objects from each other, as shown in this example with a group of coins touching each other.
