Sensor Types

There are two main types of sensor technology used in machine vision cameras, CCD and CMOS . There are several types of CCDs that differ mainly in the way the pixels are structured and image information is read out. They are characterised as interline transfer, frame transfer, and full frame transfer sensors. There are many different CMOS architectures with varying characteristics, but as the details are not important for general understanding only the basic aspects will be discussed.

The size of a sensor is traditionally specified in inches. This sizing convention is a legacy from the days of the early Vidicon tubes and these sizes do not correspond to an exact physical dimension of the sensor. This same size convention is also used by lens manufacturers to specify the suitability of a lens for a certain sensor.
