Application Areas in Security & Defence

Imaging for armoured and protected platforms

Driver and commander observation

Front, rear and side cameras deliver a stable situational picture in day and night operation. Field of view, latency and robust mounting drive the design.

Turret and remote station sensing

Imaging supports observation and tracking from stabilised and remotely operated stations. High dynamic range, defined frame rates and clean synchronisation with other sensors are the usual constraints.

Protective windows and coatings

Protective glass - including hard-coated and sapphire variants - improves resistance to abrasion, dust and mechanical impact without compromising the optical path.

Imaging for unmanned systems and counter-UAS

UAS payload cameras, visible and IR

Compact camera systems for reconnaissance, tracking and night capability. Size, weight and power constraints, stable image quality across the flight envelope, and interface compatibility are the deciding factors.

Optical confirmation for counter-UAS

Day and night cameras pair with radar or RF detection to confirm and track detected objects visually. Long focal lengths, low latency and continuous stable operation are required, whether on vehicles, vessels or fixed installations.

Sensor synchronisation and timestamping

Accurate timestamping supports the combination of radar, RF and EO data, improving tracking quality and the decisions that depend on it.

Edge computing and AI

Embedded systems enable local processing, AI-assisted object detection and classification, recording and remote diagnostics on both mobile and fixed installations, without dependency on external compute infrastructure.

Further application areas

Reconnaissance and ISR

Airborne and ground-based observation with EO, IR and multispectral sensors for intelligence gathering and persistent surveillance across large areas.

Perimeter, border and coastal surveillance

Long-range imaging and multispectral sensing for perimeter monitoring, border control and coastal observation from fixed or mobile installations.

Naval and maritime systems

Compact sensor payloads and ruggedised housings for shipborne installations, covering day and night observation, threat detection and vessel monitoring.

Edge AI and embedded vision

AI-based detection, classification and tracking processed directly on the platform, reducing latency and removing dependency on external compute or connectivity.

Why work with STEMMER IMAGING?

With almost four decades of Machine Vision leadership, we bring deep domain experience in military and defence applications. We understand the requirements that set these programmes apart from standard catalogue procurement.

Custom component adaptation

Where standard components do not meet the requirements, we act as a bridge between manufacturers and your engineering team to manage specific hardware or firmware modifications - giving you a single point of contact.

Long-term availability and lifecycle support

We manage product changes, obsolescence and replacement strategies over the long lifecycles typical of defence programmes and ensure reliable supply over many years.

Manufacturer-independent sourcing

Access to cameras, optics, embedded systems and interfaces from a broad range of suppliers, including manufacturers from NATO and EU countries, selected to match the operational and procurement profile of each programme.

Application-specific configuration

Sensor, optics, interface and processing are matched as a set to the application from the outset, rather than selected independently. This reduces the integration work at the engineering team's end and shortens the path to a validated configuration.

Technical evaluation and engineering support

Feasibility testing, evaluation setups and engineering input from initial concept through to series specification. This includes support for environmental qualification against standards such as MIL-STD-810H.

Subsystem delivery and series preparation

Assembly, optical focusing, calibration, conformity certificates and custom labelling - components and subsystems delivered ready to deploy. Where standard housings do not fit, housings can be developed or modified to match specific installation constraints.

Top-level products for security and defence imaging

We are manufacturer-independent and not tied to specific manufacturers. This lets us select the components that best fit your application.

Frequently asked questions

What camera types does STEMMER IMAGING supply for defence applications?

Our portfolio includes industrial cameras and machine vision cameras for visible-light imaging, SWIR and NIR cameras for haze penetration and low-visibility tasks, and thermal cameras for night-time and all-weather observation. As a manufacturer-independent distributor, we match the right technology to each application profile rather than defaulting to a single supplier.

Are machine vision systems in defence always PC-based?

Not in practice. Most defence and security applications we work on use embedded computing platforms rather than conventional industrial PCs, for reasons of size, power consumption, ruggedness, and installation constraints. We can help identify the most appropriate platform for an application, or the most suitable camera interface to match a chosen processor and carrier board.

What is MIL-STD-810H, and how does it affect camera selection?

MIL-STD-810H is a US military standard defining environmental test methods, covering vibration, mechanical shock, temperature extremes, humidity, sand and dust, and salt fog. For camera selection, these requirements translate into specific decisions on housing sealing, connector type, and protective window material. We support customers in matching components to the relevant test categories for their application.

Which camera interfaces are relevant for surveillance and defence applications?

Interface selection depends on the application and processing architecture. For embedded, low-latency deployments, MIPI CSI-2, LVDS, and GMSL are commonly used. GigE Vision, CoaXPress, and HD-SDI are better suited to applications requiring longer cable runs or compatibility with existing infrastructure. We support customers in matching the interface to the platform from the outset.

Does STEMMER IMAGING work under NDA for defence projects?

Yes. Project discussions in this sector typically take place under confidentiality agreements from the outset. We are experienced in working within this framework and can engage under NDA from the initial technical conversation.

Ready to discuss your project?

Our team can discuss your application requirements, help identify the right components and support your project from evaluation through to delivery. We are experienced in working under NDA from the first conversation.
