What is an Area Scan Camera?

The term 'area' refers to the type of sensor built into the camera. An area scan camera consists of a rectangular, two-dimensional image sensor (e.g. 1920 x 1080 pixels). Unlike line scan cameras, which capture only one line per exposure, area scan cameras capture a complete image of an area in one go.
