Area scan cameras for machine vision

Area scan cameras, also known as matrix cameras, are one of the most widely used technologies in industrial image processing. They capture images in two dimensions (the X and Y directions) and are ideal for applications requiring a complete image in a single capture.

We offer you a large selection of area scan cameras with different resolutions, frame rates and interfaces.

What is an Area Scan Camera?

The term 'area' refers to the type of sensor built into the camera. An area scan camera consists of a rectangular, two-dimensional sensor (e.g. 1920 x 1080 pixels). Unlike line scan cameras, which capture only one line per exposure, area scan cameras capture a complete image of an area in one go.

This technology is particularly advantageous for applications in which the object is stationary or moves only minimally, such as in quality control, robotics applications, traffic monitoring systems and electronics manufacturing.

The advantages of area scan cameras

  • Compact and easily integrated design: Area scan cameras capture the entire image field with just one sensor, eliminating the need for mechanical movement. This makes them ideal for use in compact, lightweight systems with limited space, such as robots, drones and medical devices.
  • High performance: Area scan cameras capture the entire image field in a single exposure, avoiding distortion. They offer high resolutions and can be flexibly combined with standard optics and lighting. They also require less computing power, as no image reconstruction is necessary.
  • Fast error detection: Immediate identification of errors enables quick action, increasing productivity and reducing downtime.
  • Energy efficiency: Area scan cameras offer a cost-effective solution for businesses of all sizes thanks to their low power consumption.
  • Low maintenance: This technology is characterised by low operating costs and minimal maintenance.

How does an area scan camera work?

Area scan cameras capture images in their entirety and offer consistent image quality and ease of use under homogeneous lighting conditions. A typical model has a sensor with 2,048 × 2,048 pixels that capture light through a lens and measure the intensity of each pixel individually.

Colour filters, such as the Bayer pattern, enable colour images to be captured. Once the exposure time has elapsed, the image is digitally processed to produce a complete, high-resolution two-dimensional image.

Fields of application for area scan cameras

Area scan cameras have numerous applications:
  • Quality control in industrial manufacturing
  • Robot vision for precise positioning
  • Traffic monitoring (e.g. number plate recognition)
  • Medical technology and laboratory technology
  • Logistics and barcode recognition
  • Agricultural applications, such as drones for field detection

Which Area Scan Camera is right for you? – Our Guide

The selection of the appropriate area scan camera depends on various technical factors:

  • Resolution: The higher the resolution, the more detail can be captured.
  • Sensor and pixel size: These determine the field of view and detail recognition.
  • Frame rate: Important for analysis speed and process reliability.
  • Shutter type: Use a global shutter for moving objects or a rolling shutter for static applications.
  • Colour mode: Monochrome for higher light sensitivity, or RGB for colour information.
  • Interfaces: Select the appropriate interface, such as GigE Vision (Gigabit Ethernet), USB3 Vision, CoaXpress or Camera Link.
  • Robustness: Consider environmental influences and IP protection classes.
